Short Memorial Quotes: 85 Lines Under Ten Words for Headstones, Cards and Captions

Most memorial quotes are too long for the place they need to go. A headstone has room for a line. A sympathy card has room for two. A photo caption on a memorial page gets one sentence before it starts to look like an essay.

So this is a collection with a rule: nothing here is longer than ten words. Every line was chosen because it works when there is no room — engraved, printed, or typed under a photograph — and each section is sorted by where the line is going, not by theme.

If you have more space to fill, the longer collections are at memorial quotes and in loving memory quotes. This page is for when the space is small and the words have to be right.

How to Pick a Short Quote

Three things matter more than the quote itself.

Read it out loud. Short lines live or die on rhythm. If it stumbles when spoken, it will stumble on stone.

Check it against the person. A grand line on a modest person's headstone reads as someone else's voice. The best short quotes sound like something they might have said, or something they would have let you say.

Count the characters, not the words. Engravers charge by the letter and card printers cut off at the edge. Anything under forty characters fits almost anywhere; under sixty is safe for most headstones with a name and dates above it.

For a Headstone (1–20)

Lines that have been carved before and hold up in stone. Most are under six words.

  1. "Not lost, but gone before."
  2. "Too well loved to ever be forgotten."
  3. "Always in our thoughts, forever in our hearts."
  4. "Beloved by all who knew them."
  5. "Home at last."
  6. "Together again."
  7. "At rest, and at peace."
  8. "A life of quiet kindness."
  9. "Loved. Missed. Remembered."
  10. "Gone home."
  11. "Time cannot dim a life well lived."
  12. "Her love outlives her."
  13. "His kindness remains."
  14. "Peace, perfect peace."
  15. "Ever loved, ever missed."
  16. "The tide went out gently."
  17. "Loved without limit."
  18. "Steadfast to the end."
  19. "A good and gentle life."
  20. "Deeply loved, dearly missed."

For a Sympathy Card or Note (21–38)

Lines to write above your name when you do not know what else to say. Each one is complete on its own; add the person's name and it becomes yours.

  1. "Holding you close in thought."
  2. "With love, and with sorrow."
  3. "So sorry. So very sorry."
  4. "Their kindness reached all of us."
  5. "Thinking of you in the quiet hours."
  6. "May memory be gentle with you."
  7. "Wishing you strength, and rest."
  8. "Their light stays with us."
  9. "In sympathy, and in friendship."
  10. "A good life, and a great loss."
  11. "We grieve with you."
  12. "Carrying you in our hearts today."
  13. "May love hold you up."
  14. "With you, in every way we can be."
  15. "Their memory is a gift to all of us."
  16. "Sending love where words fall short."
  17. "Remembering them with you."
  18. "Peace to you, and to their memory."

For a Photo Caption or Memorial Page (39–55)

One line under a picture. These are warmer and more personal than the headstone set, and most work better with a name added.

  1. "This is how I will remember you."
  2. "Still my favourite face."
  3. "Laughing, as usual."
  4. "The best of days, with the best of people."
  5. "You made every room warmer."
  6. "Missing this. Missing you."
  7. "Always the first to help."
  8. "Sunday mornings will not be the same."
  9. "My whole world, in one photograph."
  10. "Still teaching us how to live."
  11. "Every story started with you."
  12. "Your laugh is the thing I miss most."
  13. "Home was wherever you were."
  14. "Thank you for everything, and for this day."
  15. "We keep telling your stories."
  16. "Never far from my thoughts."
  17. "I look for you in everything."

For an Urn, Plaque or Bench (56–65)

Small surfaces, often outdoors, often read by strangers. These need to make sense with no context beyond a name.

  1. "Sit a while and remember."
  2. "A favourite place, a favourite person."
  3. "They loved this view."
  4. "Rest here, as they did."
  5. "Planted in memory, growing in love."
  6. "Held in the earth, kept in the heart."
  7. "In memory of one who loved this place."
  8. "Scattered here, remembered everywhere."
  9. "Forever part of this garden."
  10. "Where they were happiest."

Faith-Based Short Quotes (66–75)

Scripture and hymn lines that fit on a single line. Verse references are given so a minister or engraver can check the wording.

  1. "Love is as strong as death." — Song of Solomon 8:6
  2. "I am the resurrection and the life." — John 11:25
  3. "Peace I leave with you." — John 14:27
  4. "Absent from the body, present with the Lord." — 2 Corinthians 5:8
  5. "He giveth his beloved sleep." — Psalm 127:2
  6. "Joy cometh in the morning." — Psalm 30:5
  7. "The Lord is my light." — Psalm 27:1
  8. "She hath done what she could." — Mark 14:8
  9. "Safe in the arms of Jesus." — from the hymn by Fanny Crosby
  10. "Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal." — Thomas Moore

From Writers and Poets (76–85)

Ten short lines by named authors, all short enough to engrave and all worth checking against the person first.

  1. "Unable are the loved to die, for love is immortality." — Emily Dickinson
  2. "What is lovely never dies." — Thomas Bailey Aldrich
  3. "Death ends a life, not a relationship." — Mitch Albom
  4. "Death is only a horizon." — Rossiter W. Raymond
  5. "Tears are the silent language of grief." — Voltaire
  6. "Give sorrow words." — William Shakespeare, Macbeth
  7. "Good night, sweet prince." — William Shakespeare, Hamlet
  8. "Where there is love there is life." — Mahatma Gandhi
  9. "We loved with a love that was more than love." — Edgar Allan Poe
  10. "A great soul never dies." — Maya Angelou

A Few for a Child

These sit outside the numbered list because they are for a loss that has its own weight, and because fewer words is almost always better here.

  • "Small hands, lasting hold."
  • "Briefly here, forever ours."
  • "Our little light."
  • "Loved before we met you."
  • "Too beautiful for earth."
  • "Sleep softly, little one."

Making a Short Quote Your Own

A short quote does not need to be original. It needs to be placed well. Three ways to make a borrowed line feel personal:

Add the name. "Home at last" is an epitaph. "Margaret, home at last" is hers.

Add one word they used. If they called everyone "love," or said "grand" about everything, put it in. "Grand, as always." Nobody else's stone says that.

Pair it with a date or a place. "They loved this view — Loch Fyne, every August." The quote carries the feeling; the detail carries the person.

And one thing to avoid: do not stack two quotes. One good line, left alone, is stronger than two competing for the same space.

Where to Keep the Lines You Like

Families often find the right quote months before they need it — on a walk, in a book, in an old card. Save it somewhere it will not get lost. A memorial page is a good place: put the line under the photo it belongs with, and it is there when the headstone is finally ordered, and for everyone who visits in the meantime. What to write in a memorial has more on building the page around a few well-chosen words.

FAQ

How short should a headstone quote be? Under forty characters fits almost any stone with room to spare; under sixty is safe for most. Longer lines need a larger stone or a smaller font, and both cost more.

Can I use a quote without attribution on a headstone? Yes. Attribution is a courtesy on a page or in print; on a stone it is usually left off. If the line is scripture, the reference is often included so it can be found.

Can I change a quote's wording? For anonymous and traditional lines, freely. For scripture, keep the wording of the translation you use. For a named author, small changes are common on memorials but say so if you print it with their name.

Can I use the same quote on the card, the stone, and the memorial page? Yes, and it is often the best choice. One line repeated across the places people encounter becomes theirs; three different lines dilute it.
