Month's Mind Quotes and Verses: 40 Lines for the Card, the Notice and the Mass

A month's mind is a Mass said about a month after someone dies. The family gathers again, the church is quieter than it was at the funeral, and afterwards most people go somewhere to eat together.

It also asks for words in places the funeral did not: a line on the memorial card, a notice announcing the Mass, a text to a family you could not get to the funeral for, a caption under a photograph. This page is those lines, sorted by where they are going.

The short version: for a memorial card, use a verse of two to four lines or a short prayer. For a notice, give the name, the date, the church and the time, and add one line at most. For a message to the family, say that you are thinking of the person by name and that you know what day it is.

What a Month's Mind Is, Briefly

The practice is old. Bede, writing in eighth-century England, recorded a "day of commemoration"; medieval wills left instructions for a "month's mind", and families also kept a "year's mind" — remembrances a month and a year after death. The word mind here means remembrance.

Today it survives most strongly among Irish Catholics, where it is still close to universal: the family and close friends attend Mass and then share a meal. The phrase is also still used in parts of Lancashire.

The Mass is not a second funeral. As a guide on CatholicIreland.net puts it, the pain "is not quite as intense now", and the Mass is a chance to commend the person to God again "in an atmosphere of prayerful remembrance, of gratitude, and of hope". The words that suit it are gentler than funeral words, and a little more settled.

It is also, by long habit, the point when many families hand out memorial cards, because a month is enough time to choose a photograph and settle on the wording.

For the Memorial Card

A memorial card has room for a photograph, the name and dates, and a few lines on the back. Two to four lines read best. Traditional verses are traditional for a reason — people recognise them, and they do not date.

Prayers and scripture

  • Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.
  • Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on the soul of your servant.
  • I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though they die, yet shall they live. — John 11:25
  • The souls of the virtuous are in the hands of God. — Wisdom 3:1
  • The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. — Psalm 23
  • Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. (May his soul be at God's right hand.) For a woman: Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.

Verses

  • Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.
  • Those we love don't go away; they walk beside us every day.
  • A month has passed, and still we find you in every quiet room.
  • We held you close for all your years. We hold your memory closer now.
  • Loved, remembered, and prayed for, always.
  • Your chair is empty, but your place in our family is not.
  • Quietly remembered, deeply missed, and never far away.

If the card is being printed for both the month's mind and the first anniversary, choose a verse that does not mention the month. Gone from our sight will still be true in a year; a month has passed will not.

For the Notice

A month's mind notice — in the local paper, on a death notice website, in the parish newsletter or the family group chat — has one job: tell people when and where. Everything else is optional.

A notice that works:

Month's Mind — The Month's Mind Mass for Mary Doyle (née Byrne), late of Main Street, will be celebrated in St. Brigid's Church on Saturday 17th October at 7pm. Family and friends are welcome.

If you want a line under it, keep it to one:

  • Always in our thoughts and prayers.
  • Sadly missed by her loving family.
  • Remembered with love by his wife, children and grandchildren.
  • The family would like to thank everyone for their kindness over the past month.
  • Forever in our hearts.
  • Lord, have mercy on his soul.

The thank-you line matters more than it looks. A month is roughly when families notice how many people helped — the food, the lifts, the people who stood in the rain — and the notice is often the only place they get to say so. If you want to go further, funeral thank you notes has wording for the individual cards.

Leave out the home address if the notice gives a time when the whole family will be at the church. "Late of Main Street" identifies the person without telling strangers which house will be empty.

For a Message to the Family

This is the one most people get wrong by saying nothing. By the month, the cards have stopped, and the family often feels the silence more than they felt the crowd. A short text on the day of the month's mind tells them someone knows what day it is.

  • Thinking of you all this evening at Mary's month's mind.
  • A month already. I'm keeping Pat in my prayers today.
  • I can't be at the Mass tonight but I'll light a candle for him at home.
  • I know tonight will be hard. Thinking of you and of your mam.
  • Still thinking of John, and of all of you. No need to reply.
  • It doesn't seem like a month. We miss her too.
  • Sorry I couldn't make the funeral. I'll be at the month's mind.

Use their name. Thinking of you at this difficult time could be sent to anyone; thinking of Pat could only be sent to this family. If you want longer wording, sympathy messages sorts condolences by relationship.

For a Post or a Caption

If the family is sharing a photograph on the day, the line under it should be short enough that the photograph is still the point.

  • One month. Every day of it has had you in it.
  • Month's mind tonight. We'll say your name, Dad.
  • Thirty days, and I still pick up the phone.
  • Gathered again for you, Mam. The same church, a quieter day.
  • A month without her laugh in the kitchen.
  • Four weeks of your coat still on the hook by the door.
  • A month of Sundays without you at the end of the table.
  • Remembered tonight, and every night.

For After the Mass

Many families say a few words at the meal afterwards, or write something on the memorial page they set up after the funeral. These lines are a little longer, for that.

  • The funeral was for saying goodbye. Tonight is for saying thank you — to him, and to every one of you who carried us this month.
  • A month ago we didn't know how we would get through the week. We did, because of the people in this room.
  • She would have hated the fuss and loved the company.
  • We came back to the same church tonight, and it felt less like an ending and more like a beginning of remembering.
  • What we miss most is not the big things. It's the ordinary Tuesday, the kettle on, the "you're very welcome" at the door.
  • A month is not long. It is long enough to know how much space he took up, and how much of it was love.

After the Month's Mind

The month's mind is usually not the last time the family gathers. Many families have a Mass said on the first anniversary, on All Souls' Day, or during November, and the same memorial cards are often reprinted for the anniversary.

If you are thinking ahead to the year, first death anniversary ideas covers what families actually do on the day, and remembrance quotes for anniversaries has lines sorted by how many years it has been. For wider collections, memorial quotes has a hundred sorted by theme.

FAQ

What is a month's mind? A requiem Mass said about one month after a death, in memory of the person who died. In Ireland the family and close friends usually attend the Mass and then share a meal.

Is the month's mind exactly one month after the death? No. It is usually around four weeks after the funeral, on a date that suits the family and the parish. It is often held on a weekend so people can travel.

What do you write on a month's mind card? The person's name, their dates, and a short prayer or verse of two to four lines — for example, Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, or Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.

Do you bring anything to a month's mind? Nothing is expected. Some people give the family a Mass card; most simply attend. If you can't go, a short message on the day is kind and is noticed.

What do you say to the family at a month's mind? Say the person's name and that you're thinking of them. "It doesn't seem like a month — we're still thinking of Pat" is enough.
