How to Find a Funeral Home: Directories Compared, and What They Leave Out

Get Memorial · Nov 2, 2026 · 阅读约 9 分钟

The short answer: a funeral home directory tells you who exists near you. Most do not tell you what they charge, and on several of them the order of results can be bought. Use a directory to make a shortlist of three, then get each one's price list directly. In the US the funeral home must give you its prices over the phone and a written General Price List in person (FTC Funeral Rule). In the UK every funeral director must publish a Standardised Price List on its website and in its branches (CMA Order 2021). Those two documents are the only price information with legal force behind it.

This page is about the step before the one in our guide to choosing a funeral home: not which questions to ask, but where to find the names in the first place, and how far to trust each place you look.

The directories at a glance

Checked against each provider's own pages in November 2026.

Directory Country Who is listed Shows prices? Can a listing pay for position?
NFDA "Find a Funeral Home" (Remembering A Life) US NFDA member firms only Not confirmed Not stated
Parting.com US Funeral homes in 49 states and DC Yes, collected from price lists Yes: premium listings get priority ranking and a featured label
Funeralwise directory US Funeral homes, with "Preferred Providers" featured No Preferred Providers get a prime listing
Legacy.com funeral home directory US Funeral homes by state and city No itemised prices Has "featured listings"
Funeral Consumers Alliance local price surveys US Homes surveyed by a local volunteer affiliate Yes, from written price lists No; non-profit
Google Maps, Yelp US, UK Anyone with a business listing No Yelp sells ad placement
NAFD funeral-directory.co.uk UK NAFD-accredited firms (4,000+) No; members publish prices on their own sites Not stated
SAIF "Find a member" UK Independent funeral directors (about 1,000 members) No Not stated
Funeral Guide UK Funeral directors across the UK Yes, an estimate Not stated

Two UK names you may still see in older articles: Beyond has stopped offering its services (beyond.life now redirects to Farewill), and Your Funeral Choice now redirects to Dignity, a funeral company that acquired it in 2021.

United States

NFDA "Find a Funeral Home"

The National Funeral Directors Association runs a consumer site, Remembering A Life, with a locator that lists only NFDA member funeral homes. Members agree to NFDA's Code of Professional Conduct, which is the main thing the listing tells you. Membership is a trade association, not a licence: a firm outside NFDA can be perfectly good, and a member can still be expensive.

Use it for: a quick list of established local firms. Do not expect: prices or reviews.

Parting.com

Parting's pitch is comparing funeral home prices without phoning. Its FAQ says prices are gathered by phone, email, fax and from General Price Lists, and that it cannot guarantee the funeral home's actual prices will match. It also sells premium listings with "Priority Ranking and a Featured Label", which puts paying homes at the top of search results. The company also sells software to funeral homes.

Use it for: a rough idea of which local homes are cheaper or dearer. Then: confirm the current price with the home itself, and notice which results are featured.

Funeralwise

A planning site with a funeral home directory that features "Preferred Providers", who receive a prime directory listing. It does not show prices.

Legacy.com

Best known for obituaries, Legacy.com also lists funeral homes by state and city, with featured listings at the top. It is useful mainly because so many funeral homes publish obituaries there: you can see how a firm presents the families it serves. If you are weighing Legacy for the obituary itself, our best online obituary sites compares it with the alternatives.

Funeral Consumers Alliance price surveys

The most useful list most families never hear of. Local FCA affiliates, which are volunteer non-profits, collect the written General Price Lists of funeral homes in their area and publish them side by side. FCA recommends working from written lists rather than phone quotes, because phone calls cannot reveal hidden fees. Not every area has a recent survey; check the "Find an Affiliate" page on funerals.org.

Google and Yelp

Reviews tell you how a home treated other families, which no directory does. They do not tell you the price, and a funeral home with three reviews is not necessarily worse than one with three hundred. Read the one-star reviews for what went wrong, not how angry the writer was.

What US directories leave out

Prices you can rely on. Under the FTC Funeral Rule, a funeral home must give you price information from its price lists over the phone and hand you an itemised General Price List when you visit. It does not have to email the list or put it online. The FTC asked in 2022 whether to require online price posting; as of November 2026 it has not published a proposed rule. California is the exception: since 2013, a funeral home there with a website must post the list of goods and services from its price list and say the full list is available, or link to it from the home page.

How much difference that makes: a 2022 report by the Funeral Consumers Alliance and Consumer Federation of America found that only 18.3% of 1,046 funeral homes with websites in 35 state capitals posted prices online.

Who owns the home. Many local names belong to national groups. Dignity Memorial, for example, is a brand of Service Corporation International. Ownership is not good or bad by itself, but group-owned homes often price differently from independents nearby. Ask, as in question 5 of our nine questions.

Licence and discipline. Directories do not check licences. Your state funeral board does. In California, the Cemetery and Funeral Bureau's license search shows a home's licence and any disciplinary actions; Texas has a license search on the Texas Funeral Service Commission's site. Search "[your state] funeral board license lookup".

Whether you need them for everything. A directory lists full-service homes. It rarely lists direct cremation providers separately, home funeral guides, or green burial grounds. If one of those fits, see direct cremation and other low-cost options, home funerals or green burial.

United Kingdom

Standardised Price Lists: the rule that does most of the work

Since the Funerals Market Investigation Order 2021, every UK funeral director must show its prices clearly in each branch and on its website, including a Standardised Price List. Online, it must be a PDF titled "Standardised Price List", no more than one click from the home page. If a funeral director has a material financial interest in a comparison website, it must say so.

That means in the UK you can compare like with like yourself: open three funeral directors' websites, find the Standardised Price List link, and read the same headings on each.

NAFD and SAIF

The two trade associations both have finders. NAFD's directory at funeral-directory.co.uk lists more than 4,000 NAFD-accredited funeral homes. SAIF, the association of independent funeral directors, lists around 1,000 members, mostly family-run. Neither shows prices; both point you to the member's own site, where the Standardised Price List must be.

If you specifically want an independent firm rather than one owned by a national group, SAIF's list is the quickest way to find one.

Funeral Guide

Funeral Guide shows a price estimate for each listed funeral director, based on the simple funeral package price the director reports, with cremation and burial fees collected by Funeral Guide. Treat it as a starting point and check the director's own Standardised Price List before you decide.

A ten-minute way to use all this

  1. Decide what kind of funeral first. Burial, cremation with a service, or direct cremation. A directory search is pointless until you know what you are pricing. Our funeral planning resources page puts the decisions in order.
  2. Make a shortlist of three from one directory and one map search. Include at least one independent.
  3. Get the official price list from each. US: phone and ask for prices on the specific items, or visit for the General Price List. UK: download each Standardised Price List.
  4. Compare the same items. Our funeral costs guide explains what usually sits in each line.
  5. Check the licence (US) before you sign anything.

If the body is in one state and the funeral will be in another, the receiving home usually coordinates; see moving a body to another state. If something goes wrong after you have signed, funeral home overcharged covers your options.

Quick answers

What is the best website to compare funeral home prices? In the US, a local Funeral Consumers Alliance price survey, where one exists, because it is built from written price lists. Parting.com covers more areas but says its prices may not match the home's actual prices. In the UK, the funeral directors' own Standardised Price Lists, which the law requires them to publish online.

Do funeral homes have to post prices online? In the UK, yes, under the CMA's 2021 Order. In the US, no federal rule requires it; California requires some online price information. US funeral homes must give prices by phone and a written price list in person.

Is a funeral home listed on NFDA better than one that is not? Not necessarily. NFDA membership means the firm belongs to a trade association and agreed to its code of conduct. It says nothing about price.

Are directory rankings paid? On some, yes. Parting sells priority ranking, Funeralwise features Preferred Providers, and Legacy.com and Yelp have featured or advertised placements. Treat the top results as the start of a list, not a recommendation.
