Life Story

Life

Jane Austen wrote six novels, among them Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Emma, that turned the small dramas of family, money and marriage into lasting studies of character. She published anonymously, credited only as "A Lady", and earned little in her lifetime. She died in Winchester in 1817 at forty-one; her sister Cassandra's sketch is the only portrait of her drawn from life.
